Weather

Clear skies and cold start to the day, warmed up slightly by midday but then clouds started to roll in and by the end of the afternoon there were some flurries of snow.

Conditions

Very good. No fresh snow overnight. The main surface was skier packed and groomed powder. There was still plenty of fresh powder off the main trails.

Overall

Overall a succesful day, although again it did not start well.

The start of the day: A broad view of the beginner area at the base,
with the lodge on the left and Pay Day lift and runs in the
background.

Clear skies over the base area.
The lift in the centre is the new Pay Day 6-pack.
The paths through the trees of the old Pay Day lift,
which started from the red netting,
and the Gondola are clearly visible.

As usual, we started the day together. While we were riding First Time, it was obvious that there was something wrong with Chris. When we got down to the center he was pale and running a temperature.

He took some pills and then stayed with Sue, while I headed for the summit for the Black Diamond Tour.

This photo, taken from just outside the Summit House restaurant shows the line of the new Bonanza 6-pack lift and the face to the right of the run, opened for skiing for the first time this season. I was very apprehensive about this tour, which only runs on Tuesday's, but I was keen to find out where to ski in Jupiter Bowl so I decided to see how things turned out. There were six of us, two Germans, two other Brits and an American who was obviously an expert skier and skied at the back of thr group throughout.

The first test was the Bonanza mogul run. We obviously passed scrutiny so the guide headed down Jupiter Access. We turned off into the trees near the bottom of the run, a cut off I had skied several times before, but this time a bump took me by surprise and I ended up in the powder.

So to Jupiter Bowl.

After the first run up Jupiter we turned left and traversed several hundred yards across an undulating track nicknamed the Ho-Chi-Min trail. onto the sparsely wooded West Face. This was maybe a little steeper than Blueslip Bowl but the snow was in good condition. I didn't ski the run as fluently or quickly as the others, but I was comfortable, so I kept on with the tour.

The second time up, we turned right and took the Fortune Teller face under the lift. This was much the same as the West Face but was reached by skiing a field of enormous moguls.

On the third run, we traversed across the seriously steep Portuguese Gap and then took the lower section of Scott's Bowl.

The fourth run took us back to the West Face and a slightly steeper section with run out through the trees.

I left the tour at this point. The rest of the group were going to hike across to McKonkey's Bowl .. my legs were getting too tired. So I took Thaynes lift back to the Summit and the direct way back down to the bottom to meet the others.

Taken from the top of the Silver Queen run, this shows Pay Day lift on the other side of the valley, with the run down towards Bonanza lift on the right, Dividend run in the centre ground and the Widow Maker and Nail Driver mogul fields on the left.

No easy way down from the top of Silver Queen. Every option is a black diamond.

Meanwhile, Chris recovered sufficiently to do some cruising off King Consolidated and Silverlode.

After lunch we all three did several runs of First Time where it was obvious that Sue's confidence was starting to return and then Chris led me back to King Consolidated and Silverlode for more high-speed cruising. Chris was obviously intent on getting to the bottom of each run as quickly as he possibly could and turns were optional!
